National Fire Service (N.F.S.)
Standpipe
(embossed N.F.S.), Hydrant Key and Diffuser
Branch |
|
|
|
These
items of equipment were
retained at the Fire Station
in Church Street from the
N.F.S. vehicle supplied to
many hundreds of Fire
Stations throughout the UK
in WWII. |
National
Fire Service - Record of
attendance at Drills of
personnel at Sawbridgeworth
for 1945. |
National
Fire Service - Record that
shows the NFS Number related
to each Fireman/ Firewoman
and their service
commencement date. The last
13 names are Firewomen. |
National
Fire Service - Another
Record showing the NFS
Numbers allocated to
Personnel at Sawbridgeworth. |
It will be
noted that these items of
equipment are of the heavy
brass and steel construction
as were all equipment of
this nature right into the
1960's, albeit some
Aluminium equipment was
produced during WWII. The
couplings on hose were also
in brass making the handling
very heavy work!
See the
story (right photo) of at
least one occasion when they
were put into use. |

Availability Board |
|
|
|
|
|
Another item rescued from
the new fire station loft
area is the NFS originated
Availability Board but which
apparently was continued to
be used into the late 1980's
by virtue of identified
names! Also it seems that
some of the original NFS
Name Tags were kept and then
stored with the Board when
eventually taken out of use. |
